International travel has increased significantly over the last several years. One million people per week travel between the industrial and developing world. All travelers should take certain precautions to ensure a safe and healthy trip. Travel medicine’s purpose is to keep the traveler free from illness or accident. It is especially important when there is significant difference between the traveler’s home and the destination’s environment such as when a traveler from the United States goes to a tropical or developing country.

Travelers should be seen preferably one to two weeks prior to departure, if at all possible. This allows for a thorough evaluation of the traveler’s health, outline of immunization schedules and time for the immunizations to take effect.

Most international travellers need the following

  • Tetanus and Diphtheria booster (Td shot)
  • Typhoid vaccine ( protects for two years)
  • Hepatitis B vaccine ( 3 doses taken over a course of 6 months )
  • Hepatitis A vaccine in certain individuals
  • Malaria prophylaxis ( Mefloquin or Chloroquine or Malorone)
  • Antibiotic on hand, for traveler’s diarrhea
