CLASSES OF FAA EXAMINATION LEVELS

FIRST CLASS EXAMINATION:

A “FIRST CLASS” Medical Certificate is required for Airline Transport Pilot. It is valid for 12 MONTHS if you are less than age 40 before the date of the exam, and 6 months if you are 40 or more. We are authorized to perform Class I exams.  Please call our office for same day appointment.

SECOND CLASS EXAMINATION:

Required for Commercial Pilot; Flight Engineer; Flight Navigator; or Air Traffic Control Tower Operator. (Note: This category of air traffic controller does not include FAA employee air traffic control specialists)

A “SECOND CLASS” Medical Certificate will be required if you plan to go on and get a commercial pilot certificate. It is valid for one year, after which it expires as a second class medical certificate. But it then converts to a third class medical certificate for the remainder of the time. So if you are not sure which you will need, there is little lost in getting a second class from the beginning. The requirements are only a tiny bit stricter: Your blood pressure and vision must be a little better.

THIRD CLASS EXAMINATION:

A “THIRD CLASS” Medical Certificate is probably the type you will need initially, and perhaps for ever. It is good for a private pilot. It is valid for three years if you are less than age 40 before the date of the exam, and two years if you are 40 or more. (To be precise, it will expire at the end of the 24th or 36th month after it is issued, depending on your age at that time.)

PLEASE NOTE THIS HIGH LEVEL GUIDELINE DOES NOT REPLACE FAA RULES. REVIEW CURRENT FAA RULES.
